The unveiling of Stockwell War Memorial in London SW9 on 3 May 1922 -
after years of tireless fund-raising by the committee - was a dramatic
and heart-rending occasion. Read about the long and difficult background to the construction of the
monument by visiting the History section - and, of course, the
individual stories of the men who died. Order the book: www.elefantbooks.com

There is not enough protection for London's 6000 war memorials, says a London Assembly report released on 6 July 2009, which calls for more efforts to prevent their loss to neglect, theft or redevelopment. Stockwell War Memorial, built to last through the ages and donated by the Memorial Committee to the community "for ever", is suffering from weather, traffic pollution and a lack of care. The names are becoming illegible. Now is the time to preserve this unique tribute to the ordinary men of Stockwell and surrounding areas.
