- Merrell's pension application stated that he had been gassed in France in June 1915 and that he received gunshot wounds to the head in October 1915 and February 1918. He complained of headaches and dizziness and lack of movement in his left arm, and other problems. However, the medical board - notoriously tough - rejected most his claims and awarded him a 30% pension.
